Domboróczki László: Településszerkezeti sajátosságok a középső neolitikum időszakából, Heves megye területéről

94 LÁSZLÓ DOMBORÓCZKI CHARACTERISTICS OF SETTLEMENT PATTERNS IN THE MIDDLE PHASE OF THE NEW STONE AGE FROM THE AREA OF HEVES COUNTY Due to the rescue excavations preceding the construction of Route M3 in Heves county, there were also vast areas surveyed, which offered an opportunity to examine thoroughly the structures and patterns of settlements and cemeteries which belong to various time periods. On the basis of a perfunctory acquaintance with the topography of some New Stone Age settlements with AVK pottery, we have discerned such characteristics of settlement patterns which, in the given time period and geographical region, appeared to be almost general, or at least seemed to be present in a notable fashion. By these characteristics we mean one or several settlement rows on the banks of rivers, which settlement rows consist of longish pits and buildings on pile-work at proportionate distance from one another, with the burial places located around the buildings. The question whether such types of settlement patterns were characteristic only of the northern rim of Alföld [The Hungarian Great Plains] or they represented general characteristic features of larger areas in the given historical period can be but partially answered, which means that a more profound and thorough survey and further research is necessary. Establishing the inner chronology — i.e. the sequence of individual phenomena in time — of settlements displaying such patterns is relatively difficult and oftentimes poses unsurmountable difficulties. The reason for this is that most often there are no strata displayed, the number of superpositions is extremely small, and the math-statistical methods available for analyzing the finds — like e.g. cluster analysis, seriation, or classification — offer only plausible hypotheses. Nevertheless, these archeological issues in question ought to be somehow explicated or interpreted. DOMBORÓCZKI LÁSZLÓ DOBÓ ISTVÁN VÁRMÚZEUM 3300 EGER VÁR 1.
