kácsy's connections to the art collector, Zsigmond Ormos. Genevieve Lacambre, the art historian of the Musée d'Orsay spoke about the connections between the artist and the art life in Paris, while professor Kohnen about the relics of the painter's stay in Luxembourg, and his cult. The lecture of Anna Szinyei Merse was about the landscapes, Katalin Sinkó spoke about the huge paintings (A new genre in the 80's) and Zsuzsanna Bakó about the paintings that would be exhibited in the Memorial House in Békéscsaba. The following lectures were about the Christtrilogy. Katalin, Sz. Kürti, who wrote a monograph on The trilogy in 1989, summarized the history of the paintings' birth and their reception in Europe and America. Botond Gáal, professor of theology gave the Biblical background of the pictures Christ before Pilate, Ecce homo and Golgotha. Julia Szabó, the member of the Art Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences showed how the Christ trilogy influenced the young Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka. Miklós Szentkirályi, the leader of a restorer team told the story of the year's work of restoring the Golgotha. Lajos Velledits, restorer related his research with the chemist, Zsuzsa Wittmann concerning the technique and materials used by Munkácsy. Beside the lecturers there were more foreign guests from Poland, Rumania, Germany and Switzerland visiting the Debrecen memorial lectures. The third day of the conference was held in Munkács, where after reading the shortened versions of the lectures the participants visited the Munkácsy Memorial Hall and placed a wreath there. Wreathing took place in Békéscsaba, Gyula, Miskolc and in Budapest at the sepulchral monument int the Kerepes street cemetery. Pál Gerzson, the Chairman of the Association of Hungarian Artists spoke at the event. In June a Munkácsy memorial tablet was unveiled at the Endenich Schumann Musical Archive in Bonn. The same is planned in Luxembourg in 1995. Commemorations and celebrations are continual, as it is ensured by the publications, as well. (cf. Bibliography). The press, the radio and television followed the events with interest. The Hungarian Television broadcasted more than ten commentaries and two film. One was the Returning Golgotha about how the painting was restored and the other was a film on Munkácsy in The Painter of the Month series. Both were created by the art historian Péter Fitz. All the commemorations, exhibitions and publications were organized by the Munkácsy Commemorative Committee that found the financial means for the events, as well. Their work was not in vain, both the general and the professional public gained new knowledge and experience. The art of Munkácsy and especially some phases of his career was placed in new perspectives and professional connections to further the cause were tightened. Katalin Sz. Kürti
