Agrártörténet - Surányi Béla: Vázlat Debrecen legeltetéses állattartásáról a XIX–XX. században
194 SURÁNYIBÉLA BélaSurányi Outline of Debrecen's grazing livestock keeping in the XIX-XX. centuries Management of the livestock meant Debrecen's economical wellbeing for several centuries. The classic era of livestock tending was typical of the city, which was built in the grazing grasslands of the Great Plains, and evolved during the Middle Ages. This form of agriculture had bovine and horse as its most important livestock with sheep being of a lesser importance. The excellent natural conditions ensured the the birth and survival of it. This era of the livestock keeping concluded with the end of the Second World War. The desert grassland lives today under the Hortobágy National Park where this past era is preserved. The survival of native animals in the area, those that are born out of this land - Hungarian gray cattle, sheep, racka - owe a great deal to this land. Our schematic overview examines the XIX-XX. century, embedded in the national picture. At this time our agricultural came to crossroads, but having chosen modernization, the next step in its evolution occurred. Debrecen is known as the city of permanence and this tendency can be seen in its livestock culture also, which had the advantage of these agricultural traditions not being totally washed out of the nations thinking.
