PREFACE For evaluation of the operation of an artists’ symposium, numerous respects must be considered if we want to form a true notion of its creative activity and wish to research into the possibilities of further development, taking the lesson as a starting point. The publication of the jubilee catalogue on the retrospective exhibition summarizing the achievements of the Artists’ Symposium of Győr up to the present 35th anniversary of its establishment, and the entirety of the collection housed at the Municipal Museum of Art provide a suitable framework for this. In the present publication we deal with the system of objectives and tasks, organizitonal methods, inner and outer conditions characteristic of the different periods of the operation of the Symposium of Győr, today called International Symposium of Artists, the circle of participants, the questions of quality of the works created here, the circumstances of becoming acquainted with and receiving the works as well as the whole material of the collection of Artitsts’ Symposium in the museum. The size of the publication and the present level of elaboration of the collection do not make it possible to strive for comprehensive analysis and evaluation, they make us, however, create a firm starting point for further reasearch and assessment, setting the tasks of art history in the following years for the museum and the specialists dealing with the artists’ symposia in Hungary as well as the research of art history. On the occasion of the jubilee, the last National Meeting of Hungarian Symposia of Artists was organized in Győr. Two of its lectures, short summaries of the contributions and the closing document of the former conference have also been attached to this publication in the hope that seeking ways and means to solve the problems formulated here will serve as help for effective transformation of the Hungarian movement of artists’ symposia according to the demands of the present as soon as possible, for further development of the functioning artists’ symposia in a new direction and for the activity of newly established groups of artists. Júlia N. Mészáros director of museum
