TANULMÁNYOK ARRABONA 2019. 57. The Bishop, the Prince and the Vaivode Demeter Naprághy (Chancellor)‘s activity in Transylvania AND THE EVENTS WHAT FOLLOWED (1598-1602) The present study looks into the activity of Demeter Naprághy Transylvanian Bishop and the circumstances that forced him to leave his seat. Naprághy, the humanist scholar was not only the Bishop of Transylvania between 1598 and 1601, but he also acted as the Chancellor of Transylvania. An extremely heavy burden fell on him, since he had to promote the case of re-catholisation - the activity of the Catholic diocese had been suspended for 50 years before him -, and he had to serve the Transylvanian interests by manoeuvring between two Princes: Sigismund and Andreas Báthory and Vaivode Michail and the Habsburg General Giorgio Basta respectively. As it seems he was not fully successful in his efforts, since in 1601 he had to run for the rage of the Protestant Orders. An outcome of this event is a debate, a document of which has come to light and been published only recently, which offers the Bishop’s answer to the charges of the Protestant Orders. Tamás Kruppa
