ARRABONA 2015-2018. 53-56. TANULMÁNYOK WlNE-GROWING AND WINE CONSUMPTION IN THE ESTATES OF THE SZÉCHÉNYI FAMILY near Lake Fertő between the end of the 17TM century AND THE BEGINNING OF THE 19TM CENTURY Wine-growing was a prosperous and highly developed business in the estates of the Széchényi Family which took over the position of the Nádasdy Family from the end of the 17th century. This study covers the vineyards of Boz, Hidegség and Homok. The Széchényis kept a part of the vineyards under the management of their own manor, while a part of them were let out for virtual property against lawful annuity (or free). The annuity consisted of toll and the tenth rented from the Church. The study describes the names of the vineyards and the changes of their dimensions. Around the three villages in the year of 1741 winegrowing was carried out in an area of 121.21 hectares, and in an area of 81.07 hectares in 1814. In Boz and Hideghegy the majority of the owners were outsiders including the members of the aristocracy, the gentry, the neighbouring serfs and burghers, but the religious orders and some Austrian individuals were also represented. The best quality wines of the manor were grown here. The finest wines were served on the table of the landlord or were exported to Silesia. The German, Bohemian and Silesian wine handlers most often bought up the wine on the spot. The Széchényi Manor sold its wine through a Wine-selling Company. The local pubs sold the wines of inferior quality. Most of the wines were white, while red wines were a rarity (1-12%). The manor issued several orders to its officers concerning wine-growing, the vine-harvests, the method of the grape processing, the order of the wine-cellars and the handling and selling of the wines.
