ARRABONA 2013. 51. TANULMÁNYOK PÁLI-DOMBOK: THE FIRST AUTHENTIC SITE FROM THE OLD STONE AGE IN THE RÁBA VALLEY Páli-dombok site is the first archaeological evidence for the claim that the North-western part of Hungary was inhabited in the Early Holocene. The occupation was excavated in the midst of an active gravel quarry as an in situ, well defined find horizon in blackish-grey palaeosoil. It is supposed that the occupation took place at an elevated spot within the confines of the Rába River alluvial plain. The find collection almost exclusively consists of radiolarite lithic material. This raw material originates from the Bakony Mountains of Hungary. The spatial distribution of the overwhelming small flakes suggests local knapping activity. The occupation is supposed to take place in an Epipalaeolithic or Early Mesolithic age, based on geometric microlithic pieces and the overall character of the lithic material. Radiometric dating and other scientific analyses are now underway to control this hypothesis. Páli-Dombok sheds light on a crucial piece of space and time. Through this site it is possible to look into the role of the Rába Valley in the Early Holocene population history of the Carpathian Basin, eventually, the formation of the Linearbandkeramik culture and the neolithisation of Central Europe.
