ARRABONA 2012. 50/1. TANULMÁNYOK REFLEXIONS ON THE ACTIVITY UNDER THE HUNGARIAN SOVIET REPUBLIC (1919) OF ANTAL WURDITSCH EDUCATIONAL COMMISSAR OF SOPRON This paper treats the life and career of Antal Wurditsch educational commissar of Sopron who was forced to take up this position in his absence and against his will by a death treat. According to the public remembrance he was the Catholic teacher who “removed the crosses from the walls of the classrooms”. He held the position of the educational commissar of Sopron and Sopron County only for a month while he was making futile efforts to get rid of this job. Sándor Kellner the omnipotent president of the Directory of Sopron did not even trust in him and he was soon removed to another, less important position. However, it did not exempt him during the disciplinary action which was launched against him before the disciplinary body of the Diocese, so he was blamed and removed from the teaching staff and although the secular court passed an acquittal, the disciplinary body of the Diocese condemned him at both instances. Facing such ordeals Wurditsch left for Austria and after 32 years of teaching he resigned from his pension and divorced from his wife. His fate illustrates how the historical events discussed in the textbooks in wider contexts can affect the life of the individuals, and how the life and career of an average man can be destroyed by them.
