1 ARRABONA 2011. 49/2.________________________________________________TANULMÁNYOK “...WHEN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TIME OF OPENING THE INN” THE WINE SELLING OF THE CHAPTER OF GYŐR IN ÚJVÁROS IN THE 17TM CENTURY The wine selling right in its residential town was a very important seigniorial right of the Chapter of Győr, which was seriously impaired by the army. The position of the Chapter was further damaged when the king gave the wine selling right of the Chapter in July and August to the castle-guard in spite of the repeated protests of the prebends. The two parties finally came to an agreement in 1623 stipulating that in the fortress and Pataháza the castle-guard, in Sziget and Révfalu the Bishop, while in Újváros and at the Fair of Mary-Magdalene day the Chapter would respectively own the wine selling right. Afterwards the Chapter hired out its takings every year. The hirer often included the members of the elite of the town and the county nobility as well as the commoners of Győr and in smaller numbers even prebends. Once the eminent poet Mátyás Nyéki Vörös, in another year the provost of Pápóc: Mihály Mattkovics hired the wine selling right. Starting with 1674, when the dispenser of the castle-guard of Győr: Johann Haas von Hochburg acquired the right, it traditionally went to the hands of the all-time dispensers and the Chapter gradually lost control over the wine selling in Újváros.
