“1-1 WOODEN STATUES OF ST. PETER AND ST. PAUL.”

THE BUILDING AND EQUIPMENT OF THE ST. JOSEPH CHURCH IN GYŐR-ÚJVÁROS

The St. Salvator Church, which was built between 1836 and 1842 and consecrated on 12th September 1841, is a prominent Classicist building in Győr. It is typical that the local people still use its former name, i.e. St. Joshep Church. The ambiguity of this title has a simple reason: the former name of the church standing by the main road - in Kossuth Lajos Street - of Győr-Újváros still live in the memory of the local believers.

The building of the one-time St. Joseph church originally belonged to the Lutheran community of Győr and it was given to the Catholic Church by a 1749 decree of Queen Maria Theresa. This paper aims at trying to reconstruct the equipment and ecclesiastical objects of the one-time church that existed until the beginning of the 19th century by means of the ecclesiastical accounts and localise their place with the help of a layout having been annexed to the file of a civil suit.
