ARRABONA 2011.49/2. TANULMÁNYOK “A GOOD SOCIALIST AND A GOOD CITIZEN” THE CAREER OF A WORKER-POLITICIAN FROM THE HORTHY ERA Géza Malasits, a prominent member of the Hungarian Social Democratic Party (HSDP), who represented Győr in the Parliament in two political eras, belongs to the forgotten figures of the Hungarian history. He was elected a Member of the Parliament seven times. His person represents the destiny of the founding generation of the HSDP. He met the social democratic ideas while working abroad as a craftsman. He included not only the examples and significant ideas of the Austrian and German but also the English labour movement into his political horizon. After the collapse of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919 he strived to demonstrate through his own personal example that “one can be a good socialist and a good citizen at the same time” - as he put it when he received his credentials as an MP. The Second World War, the deportations and the right-wing terror beheaded the old leadership of the HSDP, giving way to a new social democrat generation that had completely different experiences. The pragmatism and political style of Malasits and the former generation, which had been shaped so that it suited into the political frames of the Horthy Era, became obsolete after 1945. Ádám Paár
