Tanulmányok - Tóth László: A polgárosodásért küzdő győri argonauta Hergeszell Ferenc (1806–1859)
ARRABONA 2007.45/1. TANULMÁNYOK HERGESZELL FERENC THE "ARGONAUT" OF GYŐR Hergeszell Ferenc was a lawyer, member of the local council, the chief constable and two times a delegate of the City of Győr to the parliament. At the last feudal parliament of 1847-48 in Pozsony (Bratislava) he was elected to the mandate checking committee. Referring to the relevant law (Act I of 1608) he spoke for equal voting rights of the free royal towns to those of the counties already at the beginning of the Diet. He successfully intervened in the Curia Case during the debate of the House of Commons demanding that those burghers who "have plot of pursue any industries" in the noble towns should bear the civilian burdens. Representing the royal towns he was a member of the delegation which made King Ferdinand V sign the "reform package" of the Diet of Pozsony. Being a royalist and rejecting the revolutionary solution Hergeszell Ferenc considered the process of the bourgeois transformation finished with this royal consent. During the elections of April 1849 Hergeszell, who lost every local election, suffered bitter disappointment since the previous feudal vales and merits lost their relevance and the values of the new representative democracy prevailed. His person and activity became forgotten. 282
