Juan Cabello–Mentényi Klára: A zanati rk. templom kutatása

JUAN C ABELLO - MEN TENYÍ KLÁRA _ A ZANATI RJC TEM PLOM KUTATÁSA THE RESEARCH OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH OF ZANAT The church is situated in the centre of the village by the main road of Szombathely-Répcelak. The name of the village that was incorporated into Szombathely in 1969: Zanat (Zanath, Szanat) may be traced back to the old Hungarian family name: Zana. In the 13 th century the village belonged to the castle of Szombathely and was owned by the Episcopate of Győr. In 1387 its name was mentioned in a Deed of the Vasvár Chapter as the southern neighbour of Septe village. Later it was appropriated by several noble families - i.e. the Szilágyi family in the 14 th century, Pál Bakics from 1538 on —, although the official owner was still the Episcopate of Győr. The first written reference to the church appeared in 1592, when it was already dedicated to St. Ladislaus. In its present uniform appearance it bears the characteristics of the Neo-Gothic style. The recent research of the church has revealed that its present basic and spatial structure as well as its body is a result of several construction periods. The first church, which was made of broken stone mixed with bricks here and there, consisted of a small rectangular nave and a square-ended sanctuary. On both the eastern and the southern walls of the sanctuary, which used to be covered by Gothic cross vault, there was a horizontal-ended narrow slit-window with slanting frame and a stone frame in its inner level. The walls were covered with mortar whitewashed with greyish-white lime-wash. As it seems there was no sacristy joined to this first building. Based on the evidence of the particular forms and the building material (the broken stone mixed with bricks did not typically appear until the second half of the 15 th century), the church may not have been constructed before the second half of the 15 th century. The next construction phase, when a new gate possibly with segment vault was opened on the southern wall, seems not to have affected the original contours of the church. A secondary pastophory niche on the eastern part of the sanctuary also originates from this period, when the first "reconstruction" of the church was also carried out. The cononica visitatio executed by Bishop József Batthyány in 1754 must have described this building still showing no trace of a sacristy. Its tower was heightened probably in this building period. The main difference between the third building period and the former two is that we have written records of its execution in the year 1779. The reconstruction was carried out by the renowned architect: Menyhért Hefele, who was commissioned by Bishop János Szily to realise his high-flying ideas even in Szombathely. The new altar-piece was painted by Stephan Dorffmaister in 1780. The extension and restyling of the church in its present Neo-Gothic form was based on the designs of the architect János Brenner in 1888. This large-scale work affected even the interior of the church. In the 1920s - connected with the installation of the new painted grasses of the windows -, further additions were made including the new gallery stairs with railing, the outside entrance of the sacristy and its door and the present finishing. In 1938 Albin Steffek covered the vault with new frescoes parts of which still survive sporadically. 203
