(Europica Varietas) TEREZ CSECS: The Image of Saint Stephen in the Tudományos Gyűjtemény The importance of the Tudományos Gyűjtemény (Scientific Collection; 1817-1841), the great encyclopaedic periodical of the first half of the 19* century was judged in different ways in different periods, but it deserves undoubted merits in the intellectual life in Hungary during the reform period concerning the separation of different branches of sciences, in developing our scientific terminology including that of history. During the course of the study of history too, the evaluation of the periodical changed, and from this aspect its most important achievement is the conscious formation of historiography. Contemporary historiography was occupied with the prehistory of the Hungarians - as the interest of the editor, István Horváth, is reflected in the studies of the Tudományos Gyűjtemény. Beyond this, however, the figure of Saint Stephen appears in publications of charters, studies of numismatics and history, in scholarly debates and book reviews. The origin of his name, the year of his birth and baptism, the authentic nature of his charters, etc., are discussed on the basis of different sources and their presentations by István Horváth, György Fejér, István Kultsár, János Németh, József Szakats, mainly. In 1841 some parts of the second edition of Hungary's history by Julius Schneller were published. Nevertheless, Saint Stephen's historic importance was never argued about. The Holy Crown and King Stephen's Holy Right Arm are also thoroughly analysed . 217
