Summary

(nowdays the southern part of Slovakia) has only brought partial achivements. In the first part of the 20th century Thain János examined the ornaments of wooden carvings and goldsmith's works of Érsekújvár and of its area. The book of Mórotz Károly called "Following Kodály Zoltán" printed in Bratislava in 1979 deals with the treasures of folkart of Galánta and of its neighbourhood. You can find a huge variety of different masterpieces representing folk ornamentation in the collection of the Local Cultural Museum of Galánta. The pottery products, heater parts, leather garments, joiner works are all decorated with plant ornaments or different flowers such as rose, tulip, carnation, pomegranade, etc. The clothes, household textile and handkerchieves are from Vágsegelye, the woodenworks (mangles) from Alsószeli and the women clothes worn on special occassions are from Kismácséd. KÖRNYEI Attila: Three Cases, or Was Beating Villains Legal in the Feudal Sopron County The study deals with three feudal cases from the first part of the 1 9th century, in which the liveried attendant, the whipping bench, beating and flogging played an important role in the relationship of the despotic landlord and his tenant. The first story is about Earl Festetich Ignác who in 1814 was conducting his estates in Egyed, Sobr and Szentandrás while protecting his own and his estates' rights. According to the socage case recordings he forced his villains - who were legally working on the peasant fields - to leave their lands in favour of taking care of his sheep. A letter of complaint refers to the eccesive cruelty of the landlord and the unfair beatings. However the meeting of the county council - as a representator of power of the feudal class - made a detailed examination of every detail referring to the compulsory service of the villains so that they could keep the order and that nothing could destroy the set up feudal system. The second case happened in Pinnye in 1818. It is about the flogging and humiliation of two women thieves whose cost of medical treatment was payed by the county government without notice. The third incident happened in Vulkapordány in 1826. The army quartered in the county tyrannized over civils, dependants and tax-payers of the county. The main purpose of the resulting trial was to protect the sovereignty of the noble county against military forces. The answer to the question stated in the title above might be that villains could legally be flogged which might have seem to be an anachronism in the liberalized contemporary Europe. The behaviour of the county council vaguely showed the historical power that two decades later funded equality of justice in the counties of Hungary. SZABÓ Péter: Petition weaved in damask by Franz Wiedner weaver apprentice The article introduces a masterpiece of weaving from the new age collection of the Xantus János Museum. The piece of art is known as a petition weaved in damask by Franz Wiedner. The object - additionally to its professional outstandingness ARRABONA Kfigl 36/1-2.
