Békés-Povád (No. 105). This population is entirely Europoid. No analogies are known to date. History: this series was not classified into any of the clusters. Due to this fact and the lack of analogies one should not try to locate the origin of the Békés population. Disregard however, its unusually large facial height the series relates to the samples of subcluster 1/a. Cegléd (No. 106; subcluster 1/a, Figure 62). This population is entirely Europoid. Analogies: the 3rd century В. C. —3rd century A. D. Late Scythian Period sample from Northern Pontic Nikolaevka —Kazatskoe (No. 28) and Neapol (No. 30), the Avar Period Nővé Zámky (No. 84) and Tiszaderzs (No. 92), the Árpád Period Ábrahám (No. 103), Dolny Jatov (No. 109), Jászdózsa (No. 111). Orosháza (No. 114) and Szatymaz (No. 117). Fig. 62: Dendrogram showing the analogies of Cegléd History : the Devin population belongs to subcluster 2/a and as such may have formed probably in the steppe belt east of the Dnepr river. This population however, also includes elements characteristic of the Late Roman Period inhabitants of the Carpathian Basin. One explanation for this phenomenon is that a Late Roman Period population from Eastern Transdanubia may have moved in the neighborhood of Devin maintaining its continuity. This hypothesis is supported by the similarity observed between the Late Roman Period sample and the Rusovce sample from the Árpád Period under discussion here (Figure 65). The other possibility is that the Devin population was resettled from its earlier habitation area in Eastern Transdanubia along the Devin section of the Danube river in order to defend that frontier region. (This seems to be indicated by the similarity between the SzékesfehérvárSzárazrét material from Eastern Transdanubia.) Dolny Jatov (Alsójattó) (No. 109; subcluster 1/a, Figure 66). The greater part of this population is entirely Europoid. Euromongoloids make up 2 percent approximately. Analogies: the 3rd century В. C. — 3rd century A. D. Late Scythian Period Northern Pontic Nikolayevka-Kazatskoye (No. 28), Zolotaya Balka (No. 29) and Neapol (No. 30), the Avar Period Nővé Zámky (No. 84), the Árpád Period Ábrahám (No. 103). Cegléd (No. 106) and Orosháza (No. 114). History: the Cegléd population may have formed somewhere within the distribution area of subcluster 1/a. With the exception of the Tiszaderzs sample all analogies from the Carpathian Basin belong to subcluster 1/a, thus no other conclusions may be drawn. Csatalja-Vágott hegy (No. 107; subcluster 1/a, Figure 63). This population is entirely Europoid. Analogies: Árpád Period Kérpuszta (No. 113) and Szatymaz (No. 117). Fig. 63: Dendrogram showing the analogies of Csatalja History: the Csatalja population was probably formed somewhere within the distribution area of subcluster 1/a. Analogies from the Carpathian Basin all belong to subcluster 1/a. Devin (Dévény) (No. 108; subcluster 2/a, Figure 64). The greater part of this population is entirely Europoid. The proportion of Euro-mongoloids is approximately 2 percent. Analogies : the 4—5th century A. D. Late Roman Period sample from Eastern Transdanubia (No. 75) and Székesfehérvár-Szárazrét from the Árpád Period (No. 119). Fig. 64: Dendrogram showing the analogies of Devin Fig. 65: Dendrogram showing the analogies of the Late Roman Period sample Fig. 66: Dendrogram showing the analogies of Dolny Jatov History: the Dolny Jatov population may have formed within the distribution area of subcluster 1/a. Continuity of the Avar Period population seems to be indicated by the geographical proximity of Nővé Zámky which belongs to the same subcluster. Contemporary analogies from the Carpathian Basin were also classified into subcluster 1/a. Felgyő-Csizmadiatanya (No. 110, subcluster 1/a, Figure 67). The greater part of this population is Europoid while Euromongoloids make up only a smaller proportion. Unfortunately percentages cannot be established on the basis of data available in the literature. Analogies: the 3rd century В. C. — 3rd century A. D. Late Scythian Period Nikolaevka-Kazatskoe from the Northern Pontic region (No. 28), the 8—9th century A. D. Tankeevka from the Middle Volga river region (No. 40), the Avar Period Homokmégy (No. 80) and Nővé Zámky (No. 84). Fig. 67: Dendrogram showing the analogies of Felgyő History : the Felgyő population may have formed somewhere within the distribution area of subcluster 1/a. Two secondary analogies of steppe origin suggest that the population under discussion came from the eastern edge of this territory. Similarity to Avar Period Homokmégy on the other hand raises a new possibility of interpretation: 114
