7, Pl. IV no. 1). Ön the vase for suspension from Szőlőhalom we find a classical Zok pattern with incrustation (PL V no. 4). The pattern of the Űjdomibóvár biconical pot is incrusted too (PL VIII no. 14). Cemeteries of the Kőtörés type The name of the group is derived from the find of Sövényháza—Kőtörés. Its most important authentic graves were discovered in the Szőreg cemetery of the Perjámos culture. Szőreg. In November 1928 and May 1929 F. Móra unearthed four much discussed, problematical cremation graves in the wide extended humation cemetery. 25 Grave 176. Depth: 70 cm. In the grave there was a cremated skeleton. On its pelvis lay four vessels: 1. Urn. its defective neck joints the oval body, decorated with incisions on the lower part, by a small rim (PI XI no. 3). 2. Truncated coneshaped one-handled cup. Reddish. Height: 5 cm (Pi/ XI no. 4). 3. One-handled pot. Its upper half is smooth, the lower part is brushed, divided by an impressed lattice ornament from the former. Black. Height: 16 cm (PL XI no. 1). 4 Doublehandled so-called vase for suspension, standing on seven tiny leet. Two vertical ribs below each handle. Red. Height: 12 cm (PI XI no. 2). Grave 179. In the grave there lay a cremated skeleton with four vessels. 1. Four-handled urn, its neck is divided from the oval body bv a small rim. Height: 23 cm (PL X no. 3). 2. One-handled pot. Its upper third is smooth, its lower part brushed. Reddish-grey. Height: 16.5 cm (PL X no. 1). 3. One-handled bulgy Nagyrév jar (PL X no. 2). Opposite to its handle a treble parallel rib runs round the bally (PI. X no. 2a) 4. One-handled pot, well bulging with a pronounced neck. Height: 16 cm (PL X no. 4). Grave 184. There .lay a cremated skeleton, surrounded by the following six vessels: 1. Double-handled urn with an oval body and a tight neck, the latter is emphasized by a slight rim. Height: 23 cm. The vessel contained the skeleton of a child, so it has been used as a pithos (PL X no. 10). 2. An originally double-handled spot, the upper third is smoothed, the lower part has a brushed surface, divided bv an impressed lattice. Height: 15.5 cm (PL X no 8). 3. One-handled pot with a well bulging body and pronounced neck. Below the handle an undulating line, the side is ornamented with a double rib trebled opposite to the handle. Height: 14 cm (PL X no. 6). 4. Coarse, conical, four-handled cup. Red. Height: 7 cm (PI X no. 9). 5. A socalled vase for suspension, pedestalled. doublehandled. Below each handle 1, on the belly 3 ribs on both sides. Red. Height: 13 cm (PL X no. 5). 6. One-handled jug, with an oval bodv and conical neck, Nagyrév type. Height: 11 cm (PL X no. 7). Grave 193. A cremation grave. The remainders of the skeleton bore out the statement that the originally contracted body has been burnt in the grave. The situation of the vessels corresponded to the humation burial too 1. One-handled jar. Height: 27 cm (PI. X no. 11). 2. Conical, coarse, four-handled bowl. Red. Height: 7 cm, rim diameter: 18 om (PL X no. 12) 3. One-handled pot. its neck portion is smooth, its belly brushed, a wart is there opposite to the handle. Height: 10 cm (PL X no. 14). 4. A vase for suspension, standing on a low support perforated by round holes; it has two pierced wart handles. Red Height: 11.5 cm (PI. X no. 13). On the site giving the type its name, at S ö v é n-y háza — Kőtörés in the island-like mound near Doc, washed by the Tisza of old, workers have found various vessels "among bones". 26 The following of the finds preserved in the Szeged Museum (13,1904) belong to our group: 1. A double-handled vessel with a biconical body and an arched cylindrical neck, having a beak-like spout at the rim. Height: 21.5 cm (PL XII no 3). 2. One-handled Nagyrév-type jar, below the handle a moustache-like treble lattice ornament. Height: 19 cm (PL XII no. 2). 3. A smaller jar similar to the former. Height: 16 cm (PI. XII no. 6). 4. Double-handled mug, with a plastic moustache under its handles, a lattice ornament on the belly. Height: 13 cm (PL XII no. 4). 5. One-handled pot with a cylindrical neck, below the handle a plastic moustache, on the belly a double lattice ornament. Height: 13.5 cm (Pi. XII no 5). 6. Onehandled bulgy jug. Height: 12 cm (PI. XII no. 7). 7. Jug Height: 10 cm (PI. XII no. 1). Bak s — Sövényháza. An important site of this group. It is situated probably near the former (Szeged. F. Móra Museum 12,1911). 1. Double-handled, bulgy vessel with a wide mouth. Height: 19 cm (PI. XII no. 8) 2. A vessel with a compressed globular body and an arched neck. The belly is decorated with four warts, flanked by inverted V-shaped double lattices. Two small handles on its side. Height: 20 cm (PI. XII no. 10). 3. One-handled Nagyrév jar with a smoo + ihed body. Height: 18.5 cm (PL XII no. 9). The K : skunfélegyháza Museum preserves two vessels, probably collected from the near-by Alpár: 1. Pot, with a shape imitating the so-called vases for suspension, standing on a pedestal pierced by short round holes. One-handled, a wart ornament opposite the handle (PI XII no. 13). 2. One-handled jar with a smooth body, 'Nagyrév type (PL XII no. 12). Surprisingly, numéros characteristic pieces of the finds belonging to the Kőtörés group are occurring near the bend of the Danube. The most important finds of this northern group are preserved in the Vác Museum (51, 3, 1-). Vác, Brick-works. The following vessels, lacking the circumstances of discovery, came to light from graves evidently: 1. One-handled jar (PL XIII no. 2). 2—3. Smaller one-handled jars (PL XIII nos 3,7). 4. Doublehandled, mug (PI. XIII no. 1). 5. Double-handled mug, its handles are leaning on a plastic moustache ornament, on the belly three vertic moustache ornament, on the belly three vertical ribs are running (PI. XIII no. 5). 6. Double-handled pot (PL XIII no. 6). 7. One-handled pot (PL XIII no. 7). 8. One-handled jug (PI. XIII no. 4). 9. One-handled jug with a long neck and a compressed body (PI XIII no. 10). 10. One-handled pot with a funnel-shaped neck (PI. XIII no. 9). The extension of the Kőtörés group may be illustrated by the following smaller stray finds: Csépa. A so-called vase for suspension in the Hungarian National Museum, Standing on a low pedestal perforated by round holes, it has two 24 Earlier we have called this type the "Szőreg" one after its most important site. Szőreg is used, however, as the designation of the group along the Tisza and the Maros of the Perjámos culture recently. Cp. I. Bona. The Middle Bronze Age in Hungary. (Budapest 1958.
