The "Zichy Expedition"

THE LANDS OF JENŐ ZICHY 197 Antal Pribék: A stable in Kishörcsök, 1870s • King Saint Stephen Museum, Local History Collection the thresher, threshing chest, chaff-chopper etc. The grain and the animals were stored in granaries and stables built mainly in the second half of the 19th century, during the ownership of Domonkos, Ödön and Jenő Zichy. The several thousand sheep formed the backbone of the manors’ livestock but all manors had cattle for pulling and milking as well. The horses bred in Felsőszentiván were famous in the county. In Felsőireg and Kishörcsök pigs were bred in great numbers. It seems that the manors tried to stay on as many legs as possible but a serious cooperation between economical units were never mentioned. Most of the holdings with 16 000 ‘cadastral holds’ were held by Jenő Zichy but sources from the end of the 19th century report about leaseholders working in Kishörcsök and Pusztaegres. All manors had servants living and working on the farms permanently. Temporary workers were employed for seasonal jobs.52 The manors East of Nagyvárad (today: Oradea, Romania), with Alsó-Lugos and Verzár as their centers included mostly forests but almost 1000 ‘cadastral holds’ of arable land, pastures and meadows as well. Because of the small size of agricultural land it is no wonder that on these holdings were not many modern agricultural machines and permanent servants
