ISTVÁN ZOMBORI: THE RE-BUILDING OF THE CITY It was obvious that the re-building of a city with 70.000 inhabitants, which was almost completely destroyed by the flood, would not be an easy task. In a political and administrative sense the situation was made even more difficult by corruption that in these cases inevitable appears. Therefore the King appointed a royal commissioner from Budapest, Lajos Tisza who took very strong and strict steps. The re-building works were carried out with the participation of the Royal Commissioner Office led by him. Basically a completely new city was planned, the works of which were done by Lajos Lechner (1833-1897). This meant a plan of a modern city, completely reconstructing the original structure of the city that was established in the Middle Ages. He designed two boulevards (a small and a big one), starting from the banks of the Tisza, in a semicircle-shape. From these two boulevards led the avenues out of the city. The same structure was a decade later realised in Budapest and Paris, too. Besides the new structure of streets, the re-building also determined canalization, the wideness of the streets, as well as the height and type of the buildings. At the same time the city received a new system of public buildings: post office, bridge, prison, theatre, new city hall, schools etc. that are still the determining and outstanding elements of the city of Szeged. As a result of the reconstruction, the structure of Szeged became so modern that it made further development of the city possible in the 20th century into a modern, European city and it also secures the development in 21st century circumstances. 49
