ABSTRACT ETHNOGRAPHIC EXCAVATION Gabriella Vida The paper concisely discusses the difficulties of historical research when sufficiently precise interpretations of earlier ages become impossible because frequently we only have written documents and their contents cannot be reinforced with objects; or by contrast, due to the lack of other sources of information, the available material finds cannot be analysed properly. As a possible way of solving this problem, the paper refers to the socalled ethnographic excavation. It briefly discusses the relevant archaeological practice and outlines the possibilities offered by this method. Finally, with the aid of an accomplished excavation, it mentions the difficulties of the co-operation between archaeologists and ethnographers and describes the methodological problems caused by these difficulties. The paper finds it worthwhile indeed to clarify the problems in practice since the final results shall be valuable contributions to both sciences. 172
