The curbing of the eyes was one of the attainable goals during the period in question, one of the virtues propagated in ecclesiastic discourse. One of the declarations made by modern religious renewal was that it must somehow keep up with visuality, a sense uncontrolled by the Church, because expressive church iconography and theatrical, spectacular mass events were no longer satisfactory (even though these remained a part of religious ceremonies and events) and there was need for movies, theatres and reading associations that would focus eyes in an approved Catholic direction. The disciplining of the eyes was closely allied to plans of creating a modern pastorate and an influential Catholic press. Examples of how these goals were achieved are drawn from mass communication, "modern means of information flow", and the "new publicity". Mária Bernadett Smid 464
