Vác The medieval ecclesiastic topography of the Eger bishopric The petitions registers (Registri delle Suppliche) in the Vatican Archives are important sources of medieval ecclesiastic and social history. Research on the petitions with a relevance to Hungary was begun some one hundred years ago. The study presents the findings of more recent research. In early 1524, and especially during the month of March, about two hundred ecclesiastic persons from Hungary requested admission into a smaller ecclesiastic order in Rome. About forty came from the Eger bishopric. Although the sources do not mention the circumstances of their journey, they perhaps seized the opportunity provided by the royal delegation led by István Brodarich and Francesco Marupino. The documents record the name, the place of origin and the place of service of the petitioners. The titles of the parishes, chapels and altars are almost always mentioned. Despite the uncertainties in the spelling of the Hungarian names, the data contained in the registers have greatly enriched our knowledge of the late medieval topography of the Eger bishopric.
