Data in the municipal minute-books on the locksmith guild in Miskolc Many studies have been devoted to the guilds of Miskolc over the past decades, with countless excellent and comprehensive overviews of the history of several guilds. One notable exception is locksmithing, about which only a university thesis has been written to date, offering a broad outline of the history of the locksmiths' guild based on the documents relevant to the history of guilds in the Local History Archives of the Hennán Ottó Museum and on various other archival records. However, possible information in the town's minute-books was not used even though these are one of the most important sources used by historians writing about different aspects of the town's history. One reason for this is that even though the minute-books are wellknown. invaluable sources, their systematic assessment is still lacking and neither have they been examined for information on guilds. Presented in the study is the information on locksmithing and the locksmiths' guild contained in the minute-books for the period between 1761 and 1872. when guilds flourished in Miskolc, without which one can hardly gain a complete picture of locksmithing in Miskolc. The study of the minute-books from this perspective has provided important evidence for the relation between the locksmiths' guild and the town which, together with the university thesis (still awaiting publication) and a more detailed review of the documents on this guild, as well as additional archival research, can contribute towards a comprehensive study on the history of the locksmiths' guild in Miskolc. Even a cursory reading of the town minute-books reveals that a systematic assessment of this important source of urban history is essential for a better knowledge of the activity of the guilds of Miskolc.
