THE SOCIETY OF ÉGERSZÖG DURING THE 18TH-19TH CENTURIES IN LIGHT OF CIVIL REGISTRIES (1760-1831) Keywords: ethnosociology, the noble Tartzali Szabó family, naming conventions, marriage customs, death certificate entries Abstract: Égerszög is a small village in historical Torna County (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén today) that lies on the border of three historical counties (Borsod, Gömör, Torna). Its population numbers have been on a steady decline for decades, barely reaching 50 nowadays. This study provides a description of the village’s past state by analysing the settlements’ oldest civil registries (1760-1831). It hints at the social relations within the village, tallies family names characteristic to the settlement and shows the nobility that lived here, as well as the priests and teachers that served in the village. It sheds light on local naming conventions based on data from the baptismal registry. Based on the wedding registry it shows the ratio of endo- and exogamous marriages and the geographic characteristics of marriages. Through examining the data of death certificates it provides insight on causes of death, the ages of the deceased and the number days before the dead were buried. By comparing the data of baptismal and death certificates, the study concludes that Égerszög was an intensively developing settlement in the first third of the 19th century.
