deportation to the Gulag for slave work. Any mention of the deportations to the Soviet Union remained a taboo for many decades and could only be openly spoken about from the 1990s. Research on the Hungarians hauled off to the Gulag is still in progress. Since 1989, the story of the people deported has gradually become known to the wider public. In the early 1990s, the economic branches which had originally attracted new settlers to the town had either declined or ceased completely. The memory of the ancestors faded by the late 20th century and the events of the shared past were at the most evoked during family reunions. The dangers inherent in the loss of this heritage prompted efforts to rescue the cultural and religious heritage in order to strengthen their identity and add new hues to the country's cultural life. The first step was to ran in the local council elections within the framework provided for the ethnic minorities. One of the self-imposed tasks of the local council of Sajoszentpcter is research on the history of the town's population of Gennan origin. A cross was erected in Dusnok in 2006 in memory of the people who had been deported to the Gulag and died there, to promote an awareness of the fact that the physical and spiritual suffering of the innocent should never be forgotten.
