Miskolc TALES FROM THE SNUFF-BOX Selection of Sándor Petró's collection of snuff-boxes Sándor Petró, the renowned art collector of Miskolc, collected not only artworks, but also various decorative objects, such as snuff-boxes. His collection of roughly two hundred snuff-boxes was acquired by the Herman Ottó Museum in 1983. This study presents a selection of these snuffboxes, with a focus on the pieces, which have a cultural- historical value. The scenes decorating these articles reveal much about the culture of bygone ages. Christianity was one of the ideologies that permeated the thought of European man for the longest time and it is therefore not mere chance that Biblical themes are among the most frequent in the Petró Collection. One of the most precious pieces among the snuff-boxes in this category is an 18th century Dutch piece inscribed with a passage from the Old Testament on its lid and base (Fig. I). The text and the depiction complement each other. The essence of the quotations from the Book of Isaiah and Sirah's son is that one should remain true to the Almighty and avoid sin. The snuff-box painted with a barrack scene (Fig. 8) leads into the profane world. The inscription reveals that this piece is illustrated with a scene from a by now wholly forgotten play, which was immensely popular in Germany between 1825 and 1870. This snuff-box attests to the popularity of the comedy Sieben Mädchen in Uniform [Seven damsels in uniform]. The French Emperor Napoleon I caused major upheavals in the lives of entire nations and peoples. His person and his deeds elicited extreme emotions: he was both adored and loathed wholeheartedly. The snuff-boxes, products mirroring actual events, provide a reliable reflection of his life. Many pieces bearing scenes from Napoleon's life can be found in various collections, and the Petró Collection is no exception. One depicts his marriage to Marie Louise, the Austrian Archduchess, in 1810 (Fig. 12), while another commemorates the Battle of Jena.
