Széphalom 15: 321-332, Sátoraljaújhely THE TOPONYMS OF THE UPPER BODROGKÖZ REGION (1864) The region enclosed by the Latorca, Bodrog and Tisza rivers is known as the Bodrogköz. The region's northern part was annexed to (Czecho)Slovakia in 1920. The study offers an overview of the area's generál situation in 1864, based on an analysis of the area's place-names, which are quoted in their originál form and according to their originál spelling since they are a reflection of language and cultural history. The place-names reflect a dominance of the Hungárián language in the area. The commentaries contain a few errors and na'íve remarks, which can be attributed to the fact that the individual recording them was not a local. Lajos Mizser 462
