A few documents (organization tions and announcements) testify to the extraordinarily important activities of the Pécs and Baranya County Museum Society founded in 1901. The regular literary reading sessions, the scientific field trips, the articles in the bulletins published beginning in 1908 and the incredibly important work of the Society’s members in categorizing and maintaining the museum’s collections were all of great aid in popularizing the values of Pécs and Baranya County and broadening and bringing together sphere of persons dedicated to the affairs of the museum as workers, donors or visitors. The long period from the founding to the present was marked by extraordinary growth of the collections, outstanding restoration work, a number of new exhibition venues, the opening of permanent and temporary exhibitions, catalogues, professional articles in the yearbooks published since 1956, and a long regula-Dr. Dombay János (1900-1961) 1938-tól Baranya Vármegye Múzeumának igazgatója, 1951-től a pécsi Janus Pannonius Múzeum igazgatója, 1958-tól megyei múzeumigazgató. 1950-es évek, fénykép, reprodukció, 9x 12 cm, Új- és Legújabb kori Történeti Osztály, fényképgyűjtemény, gy.sz. 90. Fellapozható a korabeli sajtó, a Pécsi Napló 1904. november 29-i száma, amely felidézi a múzeum megnyitójáról tudósító, száz évvel ezelőtti eseményeket -az elhangzott beszédeket, a város tanácsának ünnepi közgyűlését, a Nádor szálló éttermében tartott díszebédet, az esti színházi előadást- is. Néhány dokumentum (egyesületi alapszabály és értesítő) tanúsítja az 1901-ben alakult Pécs-Baranyamegyei Múzeum Egyesület rendkívül jelentős tevékenységét. Hiszen a rendszeres felolvasó ülések, szervezett tudományos kirándulások, az 1908-tól megjelenő értesítők hasábjain közzétett írások, s az egyesület tagjainak a múzeumi gyűjtemények meghatározásában, gondozásában végzett hallatlanul fontos Mészbetétes edények a csúzái temetőből.
