240 ZENTAI TÜNDE Rules of the Connection between the Legend and the folk Belief T. ZENTAI The basis and the pecularities of the relation and mutual effect of belief-legend and folk belief is analysed by this study in three chapters. The rules are investigated by which the elements of fok belief uniteinto a myth. The identities of the content of belief-legend and the structure of folk belief, the effect of folk belief on the legend genre and the reflection of folk-poetry values of the legend to the function of belief is investigated similarly. For the sake of comparison the belief-legend genre and the folk belief is discussed in detailes. Chapter 1 deals with the concept, genre and subgenre of the belief-legend and with its place in the genre hierarchy of folk-poetry. In chapter 2 the idea of folk belief is defined and within in the iden of superstitions belief, its place in the popular krowldge, the thinking schemes serving as a basis to these, the structure of these, the psychical basis of folk belief, as well as the complexity, structure and systematical function of the folk belief. In chapter 3 the relation and the rules of the connection and mutual effect are proved on the basis of a datailed character-drawing of belieflegend and folk belief. These are the following: 1. The basic structure of legend is corresponding to the basic structure of folk belief. 2. The function of legend is determined by folk belief. In case of believing its content, the function of the legend is primarily informative and instructive, if it is not believed, it is above all entertaining. 3. The belief-content in the connection is of determining importance, because of its relativ autonomy. Legend is not the solely field of existence for the belief, on the contrary the legend becomes to a belief-legend by the belief-content. 4. In the legend form the span of life of the belief is increased by means of its folk poetry function and values. As a final result it can be stated that belief-legends and folk beliefs have an indentical structural building up. The building of belief-legend out of the elements of folk belief is guaranted by the identical structure. The belief-legend is an aesthetic genre frame of folk belief. In the relation of belief it shows formal qualities therefore it is determined essentially by the belief. At the same time the legend form supports, strengthens and maintains the superstitious content by means of its oral traditional character and relative fixed form.
