MAJS—„MERSE TETÖ" Site and circumstances of discovery In 1966, exploring the area of the battlefield of Mohács, L. Papp was informed about remnants of human skeletons coming to light on the field „Merse tető". L. Papp located the place by means of an exploratory trench, the excavation was carried out from 5th to 6th Oktober 1966. The site is situated SE of Majs, near the edge of the summit of a flat-topped hill called „Merse tető" rising by the side of a glen leading towards the plain. Description of graves Grave 1 (Fig. 20. A) O: SW— NE; D: 57 cm; L: 213 cm; W: 53 cm (at the head-end) — 59 (at the foot-end) ; L. of the skeleton: 147 cm. Female skeleton in extended supine position. The skull was disturbed by an animal, mandible and left clavicula in original position; forearms extended beside the pelvis. Bronze earrings (1—2) consisting of oval hoops and blue bead-pendants; one on the left side of the skull, one where the mandible would have been. Leg-bone of a cow (?) outside the ight leg. Grave 2 O: SW— NE; D: 85 cm (at the foot-end and at the head-end) — 76 cm (in the middle of the pit); L: 224 cm; W: 70 cm (at the headend) — 65 (at the foot-end) ; L. of the skeleton: 152 cm. Skeleton of an adult person in extended supine position. Skull tilted to its rigth side; left forearm extended beside the ilium, right forearm in extended position but at a greater distance from the ilium than the left one. The left legbones lay in extended position, the right knee was bent and filter to the right. No grave-goods. Grave 3 (Fig. 20. A) O: SW— NE; D: 117—110 cm (foot-end); L: 210 cm; W: 65 cm? L. of the skeleton: 165 cm. Female skeleton in extended supine position. Skull tilted to the rigt forearms extended beside the pelvis. Bones of a foetus in the pelvis. Boring bit (2), a spoon-bit (L: 27 cm) in an oblique position under the skull and the left scapula. Seven glass beads (1) arround the cervical vertebrae : green malonseed-shaped beads and stiped ones. Aminal tibia (cattle?) between the legs.
