more complex compositions (figs 4 - 6). The latter evidently represent ritual ceremonies. These truly shamanic petroglyphs are often small or even very small in size - some of them measure just a few centimeters. Many such engravings can be found on the rocks of the Altai and Sayan Mountains in southern Siberia (Rozwadowski 2015), though it is not the only region in Siberia with such imagery (Rozwadowski 2014). The Altai itself is sacred for its indigenous people (fig. 7), so called Altaians or Altaic Turks, as they speak languages belonging to the Turkic language family. Shamans fulfilled different functions. They could affect hunting success, influence the weather, but very often their work was connected with curing.
