Cornel Sigmirean: The Catholic Network — Romanian Students from Transylvania at European Universities army as military priests, to work among the Eastern Christians whom they met in order to get their adhesion to the theological decisions taken by the Council of Florence in 1439, preparing thus the way to their union with the Church of Rome15. As the chances of reconciling the Catholic and Orthodox dogmas and canons were difficult, Cardinal Leopold Kollonich, the union’s artisan, proposed to introduce at the foundation of the union act the four points accepted by the Council of Florence; 1. The Papal primacy, meaning that the Pope is the head of the entire Christianity; 2. Besides the Heaven and Hell, there is the Purgatory; 3. The unleavened bread is sufficient for the Eucharist; 4. The Holly Ghost/the Holly Spirit proceed not only from the Father but also from the Son (Filioque). In order to attract the Romanians to the union they had in mind the adhesion of the Orthodox priests, who were in a humble condition. Although during the Principality they benefited from certain immunities, these had a minor value. Among the priests, few were noble, most of them having a status of serfs, their sacerdotal quality not exempting them from the servitudes. Furthermore, their theological education was limited to a couple of weeks’ course. In exchange, through the religious union one could foresee the possibility of social ascension through their exemption from the serfdom tasks and the attainment of the equality of rights with the priests who belonged to the accepted religions16. In the famous Einrichtungswerk of 1689, a document that exposed the plan of reorganizing the large released territories, Cardinal Kollonich stressed the importance of convincing the Eastern peoples, and the priests especially, that through the union they assure not only their souls’ salvation but they also acquire another social situation, being promoted among the nobility, as, the Catholic priests were, according to the law17. Facing the adroit policy used to attract people to the new religion, in the frame of the February 1697 Synod the Orthodox elite and Bishop Teofil accepted the religious union by assuming the four points of the Council of Florence. During the Synod, according to the 1692 Imperial Patent, they requested that the entire clergy and church auxiliaries to enjoy the same rights, privileges, exemptions and immunities as the Roman-Catholic priests. The Bishop also requested that the united laymen to be accepted and promoted in offices like the laymen of the other confessions and to have access to education in the Catholic schools and other institutions18. 15 Ernst Christoph Suttner Conceptui de Unire identificat in instructiunile de la Roma din 1669 §i la Cardinalul Kollonich.
