But, in July 1697 Bishop Teoill's death occurred. In such conditions, the union was achieved under the new Bishop, Atanasie Anghel. On October 7, 1698, the Bishop convened the Synod, which, in the presence of 38 archpriests decided the Transylvanian Romanians’ union with the Roman- Catholic Church. The text of the declaration of union is particularly significant because it laid the foundation of the Greek-Catholic Church united with Rome; And this is how we unite these people who are writing above with our entire law, church service, liturgy to stay the same, and if they do not stay the same neither these seals should have no power over us and our Bishop Atanasie should stay on the seat and no one should bother him19. The total enforcement of the religious union was met with resistance among the other religions from Transylvania, but mostly among the states. The union caused resistance in the case of the Romanians as well. In September 1700 a great synod was convened, with the participation of archpriests, jurors, priests from each locality and three leading peasants. A manifesto was drafted, by which the declaration of union with the Church of Rome was announced, according to the imperial decree and the Catholic Bishopric’s encyclicals, provided the granting of the promised privileges to the priests. After several negotiations, on March 19, 1701, the Union Diploma (the second union diploma) was signed, the bishop being assigned in service (episcopus nationis valachié) and appointed imperial counselor, provided that he subordinate to the Papal seat and to the Archbishop of Strigonium (Esztergom). The diploma had also in view certain measures against the Calvinist influence, the censorship of prints, but also the foundation of schools in Alba Iulia, Fágáras and Hateg: Et ut unitorum filii majus incrementum sdentiae valeant haurire, desideramus, ut Albae, Hateg et in Fogaras oppidis, sálként in praeattacta Transilvania exis tentibus, scholas instituant, et ut templa, ubi p lures fiuerint Halachi valeant erigere, annuimus. Nevertheless, the Transylvanian Romanians’ union with the Church of Rome would follow a sinuous path during the entire 18* century, but its importance for the Romanians’ history would remain a milestone, with major consequences in the subsequent development. At the beginning of the 18th century, the religious union also made its mark in the Partium.20 Foundations for the Greek-Catholics and the priests’ emancipation through culture From the cultural-national perspective, for the Transylvanian Romanians the act of union with the Church of Rome represents the most important Cornel Sigmirean: The Catholic Network — Romanian Students from Transylvania at European Universities 19 Páclpan, Z.: Istoria Bisericii Romane Unite op.cit. 111. 20 See Salanschi, R: Din istoria Eparhiei Greco-Catolice de Oradea, op. cit. 403
