ADRIENN Z ÁVOCZKI FOR THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES’ BUILDING IN ÓBUDA Following the change of regime, the Hungarian Parliament adopted a law on the reunification of the National Archives and the New Hungarian Central Archives on December 12, 1991, which came into force on 1 July 1992. For a number of reasons, a new archival building has also become necessary. The site was designate in the government act Nr. 1032/1991. (VII.9.) of which appointed the Ministry of Culture and Public Education to propose a visual plan of a building capable to store 50 000 meters of archival material. The construction began in Óbuda in June 1994 and ended in November 1996. The implementer of the building were the Pro Domo Kft., the Műber-Invecon Kft., and Középületépítő Rt., and the architect was Lajos Tolnay, who is the designer of many public buildings. The new archival building was inaugurated on February 28, 1997, and it opened its doors to researchers and visitors at the end of the year. Mérleg 400
