264 Vida István Budapest, 1946. június 5, reggel 9" A. Schoenfeld budapesti amerikai követ távirata a külügyminiszternek Nagy Ferenc miniszterelnökkel folytatott megbeszéléséről. SECRET URGENT (Received June 6-3:40 a.m.) 1050. I spoke to Prime Minister this morning in sense of your telegram 533, June 3. 1 He expressed deep appreciation and gratitude, adding that he would inform me as soon as possible whether he could make proposed trip. Owing to political crisis 2 involving his government he might not be able to indicate his plans for trip for a day or two but hoped if possible to do so later today. He said in reply to question that internal crisis was due to fact that he could not face members of Smallholders Party unless they obtained satisfaction in the matter of the county and municipal elections and control of the police (my telegram 1717, May 31). 3 If demands of his party in these respects were not met he could not assume responsibility for maintenance of coalition government and would tender his resignation. Nagy seemed determined to press for compliance with demands of Smallholders Party. I have little doubt he will also make effective use of my communication to him this morning in dealing with the governmental crisis.
