Schoenfeld budapesti amerikai követ távirata a külügyminiszternek Nagy Ferenc miniszterelnökkel folytatott tárgyalásáról. SECRET URGENT (Received May 31-6: 50 a. m.) 987. Prime Minister Nagy spoke to me today in similar sense as MYTEL 985, May 28' emphasizing that British intimation that Foreign Secretary Bevin might be unable personally to receive Hungárián delegation prior to Bevin's disparture for Paris CPM meeting would have serious political repercussions in Hungary if it should turn out that Prime Minister had visited London without seeing Foreign Secretary. Prime Minister said he had indicated to British representative here his appreciation of British Govt's readiness to receive Hungárián delegation anytime following June 11 but that he eamestly hoped to be given opportunity of meeting Bevin personally. Prime Minister then said he would appreciate readiness of American Govt. to receive him and delegation early in June and before proposed London visit and that he hoped no such intimation as that made by Mr. Bevin would be forthcoming from Washington because just as leftist-minded element in Hungary looked to USSR for morál support so the other democratic elements in Hungary looked to the West and any sign of "coolness" towards Hungary on part of Western Powers jeopardized democratic development in Hungary. I told Prime Minister that I was quite sure he was mistaken in attributing any political significance to possibility Mr. Bevin might not be able personally to receive him before CFM meeting and that he should be prepared for intimation of similar difficulties in Washington since we maintain diplomatic relations with several score foreign countries and our public men are necessarily so preoccupied that visits of foreign statesmen could not always be arranged at short notice for the precise time preferred by the visitors. I told Nagy I would advise you at once of suggested change of plans and let him know your response at earliest opportunity.
