Bécs, 1921. március 29. Mr. Lindley távirata a Foreign Office-nak a puccskísérlet előzményeiről, az olasz álláspontról VERY CONFIDENTIAL No. 84. I hear from persons who should know that ex-Emperor Karl has for last two days been staying in a country house in neighbourhood of Budapest. He is said to have gone to Hungary in order to find out attitude of Government towards his return. I should not attach much importance to this statement did I not know as I informed Sir E. Crowe when in London that ex-Emperor was definitely contemplating an immediate return to Hungary and had I not excellent reason to believe that he had received encouragement from French Prime Minister. I hoped then that he would be dissuaded at the last moment. Italian Minister in discussing question confidentially to-day said he did not believe that bis Government would take any military action against Hungary if Karl were made King. They would give moral support to any other Government which took such action but he doubted their being able to do much more. He also doubted whether either Serb-Croat-Slovene state or Czechs were in a position to take military action. Although I told him nothing about my information regarding the French he said that it was impossible that Karl could have gone to Hungary without their encouragement. The open return of Karl to Hungary would have very disquieting effect here and might encourage Hungarian officers to attempt a coup de main in Vienna of which so much has been heard at different times. It is to be hoped that he may be induced to return to Switzerland as quietly as he left if it is a fact that he is in Hungary. Repeated to Budapest No. 12. Alatta: „Transfer (?) number 15 other copy when it returns from the S of S CT March 31 (minutes inserted within)" A. Cadogan 1921. március 30-i megjegyzése: „The fact remains that both Czechoslovakia and the Regent of Serbia have declared that a restoration w

d- constitute a casus belli. We can only hope that Karl may smuggler safety away." Másik referens jegyzete, ugyancsak március 30-i keltezéssel: „Moreover Italy signed an anti-Habsburg agree* with Jugo-Slavia at the same time as the Treaty of Rapallo (Nov. 12. 1920) and confirmed... this recently with Czecho Slovakia by exchange of notes. Even the Italians could hardly ignore a Habsburg restoration in Hungary in the fact of their recent pledges!" E. C. március 30-i jegyzete: „It is quite true that Mr. Lindley when he was here recently, told me of a report wich had reached him that the ex-emperor was planning a coup d'Etat for the recovery of his Hungarian crown. I said to M. Lindley at the time
