A Magyar Nemzeti Levéltár stratégiája Zsuzsanna Mikö - Csaba Szabó STRATEGY OF THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF HUNGARY In the service of the modern Hungarian state and culture, 2021-2025 The National Archives of Hungary were established in 2012 in accordance with the intentions of the Government by merging the National Archives of Hungary and the twenty county archives. The established institution is the largest (it employs nearly 700 people at 78 sites) and has the oldest history (the law on the establishment of the archives were issued in 1723) among the public collections in Hungary. The period since integration has been the years of creating the framework and conditions for the unified professional work. Today, however, it has become inevitable that the National Archives will have a unified mission for the 21st century. Due to this, the short-term strategy of the institution has been developed, which will define the tasks for the next five years, but will place the archives on a trajectory that will lead to a more distant future. We insist that the National Archives of Hungary are a national, scientific and cultural public collection that also performs administrative tasks, but we have defined the goals along which the social utilization of the archives will be much wider in the future. Such a task, in addition to the identity-forming power of the archives, is the more efficient processing and publication of the information or data content of the records held by the archives using modern IT technologies and artificial intelligence. The short-term strategy of the institution between 2021 and 2025 serves the future alongside traditions and the preservation of historical values. 21
