VOLUME II. ÉVFOLYAM 1945. JUNIUS 15. NO. 6. SZÁM AMERICAN HUNGARIAN MONTHLY — 10c A COPY AMERIKAI MAGYAR HAVILAP AN APPEAL to President Truman and Primeminister Churchill on the eve of the Big Three Conference. Undersecretary of State Joseph Grew stated a short while ago that there are thirty or more territorial disputes which must await finall settlement at the peace table. Among these disputes are the questions of Hungary’s boundaries. Twenty five years ago, after the first World War, the thousand years old Hungarian Kingdom was mutilated as no other country ever was in modem times. From 324,- 000 square kilometers Hungary lost 233,000 square kilometers. Beside losing two thirds of her territory, three and a half million Hungarians were forced under foreign rule. The Treaty of Trianon was forced upon Hungary with total disregard of the Wilsonian principle of peoples self-determination. It is to be hoped that this anti-democratic treaty will not be allowed to remain in force and the question of Hungary's boundaries will be settled in the spirit of the Atlantic Charter. Beside the dangers inherent in unjust boundaries, another danger threatens today the Hungarian people. It is the common danger of all peoples of South-Eastern Europe. After their liberation from the Nazi yoke they are too weak and weary and could not successfully resist attempts to force them into systems which they would never embrace of their own free will. For a thousand years, since the reign of St. Stephen, the first King of Hungary, the Hungarian Kingdom was the Eastern most bastion of Western civilization. The pages of Hungarian history are filled with innumerable heroic sacrifices brought by the Hungarian people in defense of the Western World. Today when the West meets the East and all mankind hopes that peace will be built on the common understanding of all peoples that this is One World —historic mission awaits the Hungarian people. It is their task to help to make the bridge between the Western and Eastern world a permanent institution. But they can only perform this duty if they are not forced into spheres of influences of any nation. The Yalta agreement promised democratic self-government to liberated countries as well as to former “satellites.” At present Hungary is governed by a Provisional Government in which repreientatives of four parties participate. Beside these parties: The Communist, Social Democratic, the Small Landowner's and the National Peasant Parties, some other democratic political parties were permitted to function too by the Russian occupying forces. We are at a loss to understand why the Legitemists were not permitted until now to appear on the Hungarian political scene? Leaders of the Legitimist Party, like Count Anton Sigary and Margrave George Pallavicini and others participated in the Hungarian underground movement which tried to break all ties between Hungary and Germany. The leaders of the Hungarian legitimists were jailed and deported to German deathcamps together with Hungarian Communist, Socialist and democratic party leaders. Hungarian Legitimists, faithfully following the instructions of their great leader, Archduke Otto, the legitimate King of Hungary, used every weapon at their disposal to bring tc an end the hated Nazi rule in Hungary. The Legitimists should be allowed to function again. The Yalta promises will not be fulfilled as regards to Hungary until, the Hungarian people are permitted to greet among their midst their greatest anti-Nazi leader: Archduke Otto, the legit me King of Hungary. This publication, expressing the views of tens of thousands of loyal American citizens of Hungarian descent believes that in the interest of permanent peace in the Danubian basin, it is imperative that the legitime heir to the throne of St. Stephen should be permitted to return to his peoples and help them find the truly democratic path which alone can lead them to fulfill their great historic mission. i
