1920 8x3 war be ascertained; permission for their return to Hungary is assured. Their number is not great. No. 860. 8552/pol. The Minister of Hungary to the Vatican, Count Somssich, to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Count Emeric Csáky. [TRANSLATION] Code telegram No. 66. ROME, December 8, 1920. The Secretary of State 1 has repeated to me the statement which he made yesterday to the effect that His Holiness 2 does not wish to change his decision concerning the appointment of the Bishop of Nyitra. The appointment of Kmetko will be confirmed at the next meeting of the Consistorium. The Secretary of State added that Batthyány will receive the title of Archbishop and that provision has been made for appropriate pension for him to be charged to the Bishopric of Nyitra. I emphasized that the procedure of the Holy See will create the most painful impression in Hungary and will adversely affect the authority of the Church. I made similar representation to Cerretti but both he and Gasparri have not taken my statement seriously and expressed the hope that public opinion will accept the inevitable. I found understanding only by Monsignor Tedeschini who defended our case enthusiastically although without result. No. 861. 671 /M. K.
