1920 149 trade basis if Austria should consent to a plebiscite in Western Hungary. You are instructed to convey the above in the form of a note to Chancellor Renner and to publish our offer in the Vienna papers on Sunday, February 15th. Our offer to Austria will be released for the Hungarian press on the same date. No. 126. 813/pol. The Representative of the Hungarian Government in Warsaw, Count Csekonics, to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Count Somssich. [TRANSLATION] Code telegram Nos. 7—8. WARSAW, February 13, 1920. I presented my credentials this afternoon to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Patek. Our conversation convinced me that Patek sincerely believes in Polish-Hungarian friendship and considers a common frontier between the two countries of great importance. He told me that he argued for hours at the Peace Conference in favour of a common frontier. He does not believe that the question of the counties of Árva and Szepes would stand in the way of friendly relations; the action of Poland is directed exclusively against the Czechs. But the elimination of the Czechs from Northern Hungary appears to be a difficult problem. The Peace Conference is adamant on this point and since the Paris peace treaties constitute so to speak the „birth certificate" of Poland, she could not very well officially take a position against those treaties without endangering the basis of her very existence. Of course this does not preclude her from supporting Hungarian interests through other channels. According to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, direct contact between the Hungarian Peace Delegation and the Polish mission in Paris has already been established. The Paris representative of the Polish Government 1 is expected here shortly and Patek suggested that we discuss this matter with him. Concerning joint defensive action against bolshevism, Patek expressed the belief that this question is no longer of interest since 1 Zamoyski.
