Garadnai Zoltán internal consolidation. At the same time, the Hungarian economy was dominated by agriculture and that sector caused problems in France, too. The situation was further complicated by the tariff reforms of the EEC in 1968. Weak economic relations had an impact on political relationships and due to their one-sided nature, no significant development was achieved in other areas of bilateral relations. Beyond the satisfactory state of political and diplomatic cooperation, Hungary achieved exceptional attention in the sphere of cultural relations. Hungarian-French cultural relations developed into a separate field of cooperation between the two countries. This was also influenced by the fact that leading diplomats of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had a strong francophone attitude. On the whole, Hungary played only a secondary role in de Gaulle's policy of eastern overture. Still, compared to its earlier and entirely marginal role (and this is exactly what is examined here in this context), this meant a definite progress, which dominantly influenced the successive French attitude to Hungary and the consequences of which still survive in present Hungarian-French relations. 172 Külügyi Szemle
