Résumé Résumé The Roles and Functions of the Weimar Triangle and the Prospects of Franco- German-Polish Cooperation The Weimar triangle established in 1991 has fulfilled its primary political goal, but has nevertheless fallen short of expectations in its political, strategic and civilian dimensions alike. Its greatest achievement has been its stabilizing role in Europe, including the harmonization of French and German interests concerning Central and Eastern Europe and its contribution to the eastern enlargement of the European Union. Following the euroat- lantic integration of Poland, many felt that the cooperation has fulfilled its tasks and there exist no further incentives for its continued existence. Since the 2007 entry into office of the Tusk government, however, the parties have agreed on the strengthening of the cooperation. For Poland, cooperating with the two most influential EU member states is also a question of prestige, but the other two parties also prefer continued cooperation. The Weimar triangle is unlikely to become the new engine of European integration, but could contribute to the formation of future compromises in the role of an informal steering committee or at least function as an enhanced consultation forum concerning questions where original country positions are highly divergent. The Weimar triangle could also contribute to the capabilities of the European Union as a foreign policy actor. Its rediscovery attests to the strengthening of intergovernmental cooperation in the EU, as opposed to Brussels-based federalizing ambitions. The increased European commitment of Poland further contributes to the great importance of Warsaw as a partner, while building strategic partnerships with France and Germany also has to remain on the agenda. 2010. tél 45
