Résumé The Experience and Aspects of the Visegrad Co-operation within the European Union The current study undertakes to provide a brief overview and assessment of the evolving practice of the Visegrad Group (V4) within the institutional and policy fabric of the European Union. First, the general framework for interpretation of the V4 co-operation in the wake of the members countries' EU accession is outlined. Then, the characteristic features and necessary conditions of co-operation among the Visegrad countries is defined. The essay centers on the regular consultations and co-ordination meetings as the implementation mechanism of V4 co-operation. Later, the focus of investigation shifts onto particular dimensions of the operation of the Visegrad Group in the context of the Union: V4 candidature for, and participation in EU agencies as well as the co-ordination and relationship between the V4 and EU presidencies. Another aspect that the study goes on to examine is the collaboration of the Visegrad Group with external partners in the so-called V4+ formats from within and without the European Union. The V4 + B3 format represents one particular combination of these co-operative contacts which is explained in more details. The entry of the V4 countries into the Schengen zone is brought into the study as the first and fully accomplished example of the successful concert of Visegrad aspirations and efforts in a specific and significant area of further integration into the Union. Then, attention is turned onto the significance of the V4 as a convenient platform for thematic and occasional coalition formation in EU politics and decision-making. Finally, the summary and lessons of Visegrad co-operation intends to draw some conclusions from the experience of the past 5 years within the EU. 70 Külügyi Szende
