Résumé The Experiences of the Mission of the African Union (AMIS) in Darfur: African Problems with African Answers? The author discusses the peacekeeping operation of the African Union in Darfur called AMIS through his personal experiences. He was one of the military-logisctical advisors delegated by the European Union for some time. The African Union has positioned itself as a regional great power recently. However, according to a security expert, it is able to function only as a one-sided organization because - despite being politically efficient -- it is able to play a limited role for lack of adequate material and logistical background. The African Union overestimated its capabilities. Thus, its peacekeeping missions so far (in Burundi, Darfur, and Somalia) have been able to achieve only limited successes, though these so-called successes have been interpreted as failures by the international public opinion. Though the organization was unable to find an effective solution to the situation in Darfur, it still called attention to the slogan of 'African problems need African solutions', which has often been repeated by African politicians. Now, the question arises whether the Africans (specifically the African Union) are able at all to solve their own problems; above all else, to create peace on the continent hit by civil wars and ethnic conflicts. The essay is seeking answers to these questions by analyzing the experiences of the peacekeeping operation in Darfur as well as trying to make predictions regarding the peace-enforcing and supporting missions which are to be launched in the future. 110 Külügyi Szemle
