Résumé From de Gaulle to Sarkozy: The Relations between France and NATO (1966-2009) President Charles de Gaulle withdrew France from the military strucrure of NATO in 1966 because of a host of reasons, while the country continued to be a member of the North Atlantic Treaty. The deployability of the independent French nuclear deterrence force became one of the uncertainties of the integrated defense structure of the Euro-atlantic region. The use of the French forces stationed in Germany by the Western community was later regulated by a number of agreements. We can talk about more substantial changes only in the 1990s when President Chirac tried reintegration by requesting acceptable conditions; however, these attempts were vetoed by the United States. In spite of it, France was among the most important participants in the peacekeeping forces of the European members of NATO. France has unquestionably committed itself to the international bloc led by the United States this time with the re-integration carried out by President Sarkozy, though it has received unfair positions in return both with regard to the European security architecture and the current missions, positions and roles of NATO. It has taken a significant step towards re-integration; nevertheless, it has not integrated back into NATO's military structure completely. 2009. nyár 87
