Résumé The 'Celtic Tiger' - 'Scorpions in a Bottle'. On the Irish National Identity The origins of Irish national identity go back to anti-Britishness and the monopoly of Catholic religion. In addition, it is neutrality that constitutes one of the guiding principles of the Republic of Ireland since the birth of the independent Irish state. However, EU membership has brought about certain changes. As one of the leading experts of the question contendsas a result of the membership in the EU the average Irish man and woman has become more secular, more materialistic, more permissive, and more indi- vidualalistic' than before. At the same time, we should make a difference between the Irish identity in the Republic of Ireland and in Ulster, that is, the counties which belong the United Kingdom. Here, even the majority of the Catholics do not look at the Republic of Ireland as their homeland; a great majority of them accept Northern Ireland as a part of the U.K. and its current status. Mention should be made of the 70 million people of Irish origins who live all over the world; some 40 million of them can be found in the United States. They, especially the latter, have played a decisive role in matters of their, or their ancestors' country of origins, including the Northern Irish peace process. 22 Külügyi Szemle
