Résumé pro-Greek and pro-Rumanian attitude which is rooted in the common Orthodox religion; ability to adjust to the harshest conditions and srong reliance on one another; and a democratic public spirit deriving from the unified peasant society. Serbian national identity was also shaped by the experience of building a modern nation within Austro-Hungary (with the help of the autonomy of the Military Border, the renaissance of linguistic and cultural heritage, and the unification or 'Yugoslavism') and the Ottoman Empire parallelly, through insurrections, an autonomous principality then an independent kingdom, the liberation of the areas populated by Serbs and their unification in Greater Serbia. The tool of the acquisition of territories with mixed population has been ethnic cleansing for seven centuries. It is strong constituting (false) idea in the Serbian mind that they have won their wars, but have lost their peaces - and it is also a critique of the Tito-Communist Yugoslavia. The demographic explosion among the Albanians (their number has increased fivefold int he past 80 years) has reinforced the perception of threat of the Serbians and helped Milosevic get into power. The overwhelming majority of the Serbs, especially the ones in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo, supported the creation of a Greater Serbia ont he ruins of Yugoslavia by force, even if it meant an opposition to the whole (Western) world. The defeat in 1999, the de facto loss of Kosovo, and the fall of Milosevic did not bring about a national self-examination or the admission of the responsibility of the intellectual-political elite either. And the policy of the West - the U.S. and the EU - which again relies on Serbia in opposition to its neighbors further delays the critical breaking with the past and injects ne life the distorted Serbian self- image, national identity, and the revisionist policy based on them.
