Summer, 1957 By: GABRIEL LUKAS Following several trips to Europe and Latin America 1 decided to go again on. a coast-to-coast tour of the Ütmed States combining it with a hop-over to Hawaii. My double purpose was :to attend a number of music festivals en route and to revisit some of the major American art galleries which I last saw in 1951. Also I wanted to explore some others that were unkown to me until now. In my two articles in the first I shall deal. with the museums and in the second with the artistic events and Hawaii. I left Trenton around the end of June and stopped first at Toledo, O. The Toledo Art Institute is one of the largest and finest in the ■ country. It is the Great Gallery where they have their best paintings. Here one can see in one room, among others such masterpieces as the Adoration of the Child by Filippino Lippi and another by Piero di Cosimo; two fine El Grecos; the famous Catherine Howard by Holbein and a large altarpiece by Rubens acquired not too . long ago. —­­This museum has probably the most extensive glass collection in America which is due to the fact that if was Mr. Libbey, Toledo glass-manufacturer who was one of the founders and chief contributors of this remarkable institution. After Toledo came Detroit. The Detroit institute of Arts always has been one of my favorites. The transparent way of displaying their .treasures is one of the pleasures of visiting this gallery. And what treasures they are! Here are the Bruegel Wedding Dance, several Rubens', many Rembrandts, a fine little Beato Angelico and the ar; sensation of the year: the Adorattion of the Child with the two angels by Leonardo. Even though not all art critics agree to the authorship of Leonardo, the two angéls emanate such unearthly beauty that the painting would be the star of any art collection. Personally I accept it also as a Leonardo because the details are so similar to the authenticated Leonardo masterpieces Which I saw elsewhere. N<?ar Detroit is the Cranbrook Art Institute with the lovely statues by Carl Millas. I looked at them with pleasure and sadness at the ime as I recalled, my, riin-j­wit'h Carl Milles in Stockholm shortly before his death in 1955. The Chicago Art Institute is another important gallery. Chicago has one of the finest collection of French impressionists in the country. Renoir, Degas, Manet, Monet, Cézanne, Pissarro are all richly represented. The Minneapolis Institute of. Arts contains a number of notable paintings. Probably the most important is the El Greco, Purification of the Temple which in the 'Minneapolis version shows the four famous contemporaries of El Greco in the right comer. These are: Raphael, Titian, Michelangelo and Clovio. The museum's courteous Mr. Ruepple took out of storage for me their famous Titian, a fine Copley and an interesting Guido Reni. A second ar: gallery in Minneapolis is the Walker Art Center with quite a number of modern pointings. Seattle I visited for the first time and found it an attractive, cool city. Artistically among other things it offers the. Seattle Art Museum where I first encountered donations of the Kress Collection outside of Washington. In the Kress Wing I loved their Paolo Veronese, Palma il Giovane and the wonderful large Canaletto. Their own collection's. strongest points, are the Japanese paintings and other Oriental works of art. In these works this gallery is quite outstanding. — The Emma and Charles Frye Collection leans heavily towards late 19th century art, such as works by Munkácsy, Kaulbach, Lenbach etc. — The Henry Art Museum right now is undergoing a .process of rearrangement. The Portland Art Museum has also a Kress Wing. This museum is outstanding in its primitive and Indian art" section, donated - mainly by Mr. Rasmussen. San Francisco is my most beloved city in the United States. Besides the breathtaking view San Francisco offers also a number of important artistic attractions. My favorite is the De Young Memorial Museum with the stupendous Kress Col­lection and the to me very appealing Tintoretto, Christ at the Pool of Bethesda which is a preparatory painting to the final version at the Ohiesa di San Rocco; Venice, Italy.' — The California Palace of the Legion of Honor is another fine museum in the Bay City. — The San Francisco Museum of Art cor­responds to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Santa Barbara offers to art lovers the Santa Barbara Art Museum. This museum goes in mainly for modern art and holds many important exhibitions of contemporary art. One of these I saw, was the exhibition of paintings from the Zacks Collection, Toronto,.Canada. — Besides the Art Museum Santa Barbara is noted for its lovely mission and its fine Spanish- Iooking Court House. The leading depository of art in Los Angeles is the Los Angeles County Museum. In spite of many fine paintings their enjoyment is not easy because of poor displaying methods. Italian paintings and stuffed animals can follow each other in a most disconcerting • way. — Near Los Angeles is Saa Marino with the famous Huntington Library and Art Gallery. Here we find some of the finest examples of British painting in lovely surroundings. Gainsborough's ''Blue Boy" is here too. Even though the Mormon Temple is the star attraction at Salt Lake City, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts offers many unusual art treasures, such as an outstanding collection of Jades, donated by Mrs. Hudn-ut of cosmetic fame. The Denver Art Museum contains another Kressa Wing besides the important collection of their own. The Oriental Museum attached to the former is quite a treat to those who enjoy Far Eastern art. Jubileumi táncmulatság a Magyar Demokraták rendezésében Mészáros György Nagy Lajos Október közepén a trentoni magyarságnak kiiváló szóra­kozásban ' lesz része. A Magyarországról elmenekült hivatásos művészek tartják első trentoni, de egyben amerikai előadá­sukat "Budapesti Képeslap" cimmel. Egy dalokban, humorban gazdag tartka est kerül bemutatásra a Független Magyar Re­formátus Egyház Beatty és Grand Street sarkán ‘lévő iskolá­jának nagytermében október 12-én szombatton este 8 órakor. A műsorban kimondottan csak olyan művészek lépnek fel, akik tehetségük folytán a magyarországi ’ szinházi és művész­­élet ismert és kiemelkedő tagjai voltak és kivétel nélkül a budapesti rádiónál is szerepeltek. Az est keretében felcsendül­nek á legszebb és legkedveltebb magyar nóták, csárdások, valamint dalok és duettek Lehár Ferenc; Kálmán Imre és Strauss János felejthetetlen operettjeiből. Felcsendülnek a Csárdás királynő, Mórica grófnő, Vig özvegy, Cigánybáró, Mosoly országa" csodálatos melódiái, Jósa Margit, Nagy Lajos, Szabó Károly és Horváth László tolmácsolásában.
