1956 december 20. AN IMPORTANT AND TIMELY MESSAGE TO NEW AMERICANS EVERYWHERE These words are spoken to you unselfishly, and expressed in simple language. I address myself to tiiose who look upon America as their Country, and not as a junction point on the highway of their life. You know best that, outside of America there is no security for you anywhere. — That s why you are here. And I do not merely speak in my own name, out also in the name of those thousands anc^ *ens thousands who, at costly sacrifices and taxes contributed to your redemption from physical and mental bondage, transplanted you and your dear ones to these safe shores. We deem it our duty, therefore, to help bring you closer to our hearts and aissimilate you into our great American Family. Of course, you too have your part to perform in this process. Your task is to respond and to cooperaie with those who would make you at home here as much as is humanly possible. This is a simple performance on your part indeed; to learn our language and our ways of living and thinking as Americans united. In order to know our great Country, you should, of necessity, speak our language, read our newspapers and our literature, see our movies and listen to our television programs, and listen to public lectures and speakers on various subjects. You can not remain at home and expect all these benefits to come to you. These are the means whereby you shall learn of, and become attached to your new Country to the extent that you will learn to love America and to appreciate its blessings from day to day. Some of you have complained about your meagre income and lowly type of work. This will change for the better only after you have learned to express yourself and are able to follow instructions in your daily work. The language is the key which alone will open to you more pleasant ways of life. Another observation which ; I chose to make in this connection is; your constant reference to your past life in- Hungary. Emphasis is often placed on your descent and former station in life. Also, we often hear one's "race" and religion dissected as if to perform an operation on the person in order to remove the objectionable phases thus in evidence to you. It is almost natural for you to do this in the light of your training abroad. We in America do not and can not subscribe to such racist ideologies since our philosophy of life is diametrically opposed to the one you lived under. Just glance for a moment at a guarter silver dollar and the inscription; "E PLURIBUS UNUM". ii moans- From many vpeuoies; one. We call our Country the "UNITED STATES OF America". Wherever you j go you hear the word in some form or another. Even in labor [ circles the word UNION stands for togetherness, as opposed \ to living apart in antagonism. Our American Constitution j declares that; "ALL -MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL, that they are j endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that J among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." j We concern ourselves individually and collectively with progress and human development as opposed to European crack-pot theories of racism and descent. We believe in the solidarity of the human race and the ascent of men, while at the same time recogniizing religious and language groups no matter what the color of their skin may be. We live as individuals and as c nation by faith in the future and, therefore get ahead. We look forward, while Europeans, generally, look backward. You, my new American friends, should get yourselves in line with America and oast away the fallacious ideologies which resulted in your becoming persons without a Country in your own motherland.
